15-year mandatory minimum federal sentence for possessing shotgun shells (no shotgun) almost 20 years after past felonies - The Washington Post: "To be honest, I don't get too excited by felon-in-possession cases. I think that non violent felons - say tax evasion - probably shouldn't be proscribed arms, but burglars get less sympathy - burglary is certainly a crime with a high potential for violence.
I just think it's a little inconsistent that we forever proscribe guns - even a fired cartridge case - to someone with a 20 year old tax evasion charge, but let someone who killed someone while driving drunk, or in a drunken rage, buy booze again[1]. We talk about universal background checks for guns, but we could just add an A-for-alcohol endorsement to driver's licenses and card everyone. It wouldn't really keep that many drunks from abusing alcohol, but then the various gun laws really aren't much of an impediment for crooks that want guns either. "
